Introduction

Legal English has become an indispensable skill in the modern legal landscape. Whether working in a law firm, corporate environment, government, tax advisory or the notarial profession, legal professionals increasingly deal with international clients, English-language contracts and cross-border regulations and laws.

Clear, accurate and professional English is essential. Even small linguistic inaccuracies – in terminology, nuance or grammar – can lead to misunderstandings and potential legal risks.

Our Legal English courses help legal professionals communicate with confidence, precision and professionalism in an English-language legal environment.

We offer 2 distinct courses: Legal English Basic and Legal English Advanced. Both courses are highly interactive and hands-on, enabling participants to apply what they learn directly in their daily legal practice.

Legal English – Basic

Course Overview
This interactive introductory course provides legal professionals with a strong foundation in Legal English. The course focusses on clear, correct and professional communication in both written and spoken form.

The course covers, amongst other things:

• Essential Legal English grammar & punctuation
• “Lost in Translation”: how to avoid ‘literal’ translations and what to do when an exact translation of the terminology needed is not in existence?
• Comparative legal systems & institutional overlap
• Formal vs. informal Legal English
• Vocabulary building within your specific legal area:
  • how and where to find what you need
  • how to verify correct word choice
• Professional e-mail communication and language style
• Questions and practical discussion

Who should attend?
This course is intended for legal professionals such as lawyers, civil-law notaries, legal counsel and other professionals who regularly work and communicate in English, or who wish to improve their Legal English skills before moving on to more advanced drafting and communication.

Language Level
Minimum recommended level: B1-B2:

• B1 (Intermediate): Can handle most everyday situations, describe experiences, and express opinions on familiar subjects. Is able to explain legislation in simple terms, write e-mails using short sentences and correct, although simple, grammatical structures. Can discuss a non-complex legal case with a client; has a reasonable grasp of the legal terminology required to do so.

• B2 (Upper-Intermediate): Can participate in discussions, understand more complex texts, and communicate with fluency and detail. Is able to explain legislation in more detail and using more complex grammatical structures. Can discuss a complex legal case with a client, going into more depth and using a larger variety of grammar and legal terminology.
