Clear, accurate and professional English is essential. Even small linguistic inaccuracies – in terminology, nuance or grammar – can lead to misunderstandings and potential legal risks.
Our Legal English courses help legal professionals communicate with confidence, precision and professionalism in an English-language legal environment.
We offer 2 distinct courses: Legal English Basic and Legal English Advanced. Both courses are highly interactive and hands-on, enabling participants to apply what they learn directly in their daily legal practice.
Legal English – Advanced
Course Overview
This advanced course is designed for legal professionals who already have a solid command of Legal English and wish to refine their skills for more complex legal tasks.
The course covers, amongst other things:
- Advanced Legal English grammar & punctuation
- “Lost in Translation”: how to avoid ‘literal’ translations and what to do when an exact translation of the terminology needed is not in existence?
- Advanced formal vs. informal Legal English
- Advanced vocabulary development within your specific legal field, including:
- how and where to find what you need; appropriate terminology
- how to verify correct word choice and what to do when no direct equivalent exists
- Advanced legal drafting: the use of modal verbs, ‘legal language pairs’ and language style
- AI in legal drafting – help or hindrance? How to use AI tools responsibly while avoiding subsequent issues in our legal drafting
- Presentation skills, including ‘persuasive courtroom language’ and interactive ‘arguing’ exercises
- Maintaining and developing your language level: tips and tricks for continuous improvement
- Questions and practical discussion
Who should attend?
This course is intended for legal professionals such as lawyers, civil-law notaries, legal counsel and other legal professionals who already have a solid foundation in Legal English and wish to deepen their skills for drafting, negotiating and communicating in complex English-language legal contexts.
Language Level
Minimum recommended level: C1:
- C1 (Advanced): Can understand subtext, express ideas fluently and flexibly, and adapt tone depending on context. Is able to explain legislation clearly and fluently. Has the ability to switch between formal and informal English as the client may require. Can discuss a complex legal case with a client with all the nuance, subtext and legal terminology required.

Victoria J. Laws
Victoria J. Laws is een ‘native speaker‘ Engels afkomstig uit het noordoosten van Engeland en woont inmiddels al bijna drie decennia in Nederland. Zij spreekt zowel Engels als Nederlands vloeiend en beweegt zich daardoor moeiteloos binnen de Nederlandse juridische praktijk.
Zij volgde in het Verenigd Koninkrijk de advocatenopleiding met een focus op procesvoering en strafrecht. Tegenwoordig richt zij zich volledig op het doceren van Legal en Business English aan juridische en financiële professionals. Recentelijk is zij benoemd tot Legal English Lecturer aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Vanaf 2026 verzorgt zij tevens onderwijs aan juridische en financiële professionals verbonden aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.
Daarnaast verzorgt Victoria regelmatig trainingen voor advocatenkantoren, het Openbaar Ministerie en andere juridische organisaties. Haar onderwijs kenmerkt zich door een sterke focus op precisie, terminologie en praktische toepasbaarheid binnen de juridische context.
Een bijzondere inhoudelijke expertise van Victoria ligt op het snijvlak van Legal en Forensic Linguistics, waarbij zij inzicht biedt in het gebruik en de interpretatie van taal binnen juridische procedures en besluitvorming.
